That’s So Minnesota: Sugar Production

Today I learned that Bakers Sugar, Granulated Sugar, Fruit Sugar and Liquid Sugar are manufactured from sugar beets. I never knew that sugar came from beets!

Where have I been?

Apparently, Minnesota ranks first nationally in sugarbeet production, raising 460,000 acres annually. North Dakota follows close behind, raising 260,000 acres annually, placing it 3rd nationally.

According to the University of Minnesota Extension, Minnesota and North Dakota officially became the “nation’s sugar bowl” in 1974. The annual economic benefits from the beet sugar industry in Minnesota include $1.1 billion in direct impacts and $2 billion in secondary impacts.

Next time you’re in the store check! You might be eating sugar from Minnesota!
